New students are always welcome!

Open to practitioners of all levels, Knoxville Insight Meditation provides a supportive community and place to:

  • Learn insight or mindfulness meditation (often called Vipassana meditation.)
  • Deepen your meditation practice.
  • Explore the ethics and teachings of Buddhist and other wisdom traditions.
  • Learn how to respond more skillfully to the stresses, disappointments, and losses that that naturally arise in life.
  • Reduce the suffering that we all inadvertently cause ourselves and others.
  • Meet other people who are deeply committed to making their lives and this world a better place.

We welcome diversity. Our meeting place is wheelchair accessible, and chairs and cushions are provided.

Our Background

We began in January 2007 and continue to meet each Monday night. We hold day-long retreats and special events periodically. The foundation of Knoxville Insight Meditation is taken from the Thai Forest Tradition and the works of western teachers such as: Phillip Moffitt, Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg, Jack Kornfield, Sylvia Boorstein, Jon Kabat-Kin and Tara Brach.

When: Monday night from 7:00 – 8:30 PM ET
Where: Losel Shedrup Ling
5415-F Kingston Pike in the Bearden area of Knoxville, TN
Activities:
  • 45-minute guided meditation
  • Short break
  • Group check-in
  • Dharma talk or group discussion
  • Loving kindness meditation (time varies)
  • Closing and dedication of merit
Protocol:
  • Please remove your shoes and store by the door.
  • Please try to arrive before 7:00 and settle in quietly.
  • Please observe silence during sitting periods
  • If you need to leave early, you may leave right after the first sitting or talk. Please do not leave during a meditation period.
  • Please practice mindful listening and speaking. Unless requested, do not offer suggestions or engage in cross-talk during group discussions.
  • Speak from your own experience.
  • There is no charge for the teachings. Donations (Dana) for the teacher and Losel Shedrup Ling are accepted.

About Ann Pendley

Ann Pendley is a Knoxville businessperson who has practiced meditation since 1999. She is an experienced practitioner who has attended numerous meditation retreats - primarily at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA, and Insight Meditation Society, in Barre, MA. In 2008, Ann completed Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leader Program, a four-year instructional program for meditation teachers and group leaders.

In addition to leading the Knoxville Insight Meditation Sangha, Ann teaches mindfulness meditation at The Cancer Support Community and to various groups and individuals in the Knoxville area.
